TOMS + Glik’s One Day Without Shoes 2013

For the past 3 years Glik’s has celebrated TOMS One Day Without Shoes under the St. Louis, Missouri Arch. The whole Home Office shed their shoes and walked the Arch grounds barefoot. One Day Without Shoes is a special day that Glik’s helps TOMS raise awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s life. This day is for spreading the ONE FOR ONE message!

We set up outdoor activities, played games, made crafts, shared IMO’s pizza, and passed out goody bags to the public. If you don’t already know, the Midwest weather is fickle and can never decide what climate to relax in. The first two years were bright and sunny, the public was out in the masses enjoying the warmth. Our feet were lucky. Yes, we were barefoot, but we still had the luxury of warmth and soft soil.

It was bound to happen sometime, so why not this year…

Rain. Cold rain. Lots of it.

 But we were not alone. Some of our Northern locations had snow.

No complaints, though! Despite the wet and cold, we had fun in our bare feet! Here are a few of our favorite photos from TOMS One Day Without Shoes 2013…

TOMS One Day Without Shoes 2013

Last year on April 10^th the Glik’s home office staff gathered under the Arch with our friends/family to raise awareness and celebrate the TOMS shoes campaign One Day Without Shoes. We invited the public to join in on our games, eat yummy pizza from IMO’s, and put their best foot forward (literally) by creating a bit of art.

Our afternoon was sunny and bright, but don’t let that fool you… It was still very cold and windy outside. The ground felt cold and hard beneath our feet, and the grass was stiff from winter’s harsh treatment. It did not contour to each step we took, as it would have in the warmer spring or summer seasons. By the end of the day our feet ached from the ground debris and were numb due to the elements. This was the most important lesson behind ODWS.  We were able to learn what it felt like, for several hours, to not have shoes to protect our feet.

 

Personally, I spent the whole day without shoes. This included walking in rock strewn parking lots, stubbing my toes on various rocks, twigs, steps, and desk legs.  Worst of all, I had to walk barefoot into a public restroom because I could no longer hold myself, which was the most disgusting thing EVER. I felt gross, embarrassed, (secretly) whiney, and ashamed for having those– so self-absorbed– complaints. Having shoes is actually a luxury, and I have a closet full of them, but most don’t even serve an actual function.

 

Oh, and the stares…

People actually gawked, which made me feel slightly overexposed. Some people approached me and asked why I was barefoot, which was nice. It felt really good to be able to share with others the reason why I was without my shoes. This is the goal behind TOMS One Day Without Shoes movement.

 

One Day Without Shoes has helped to raise awareness for the millions of people, throughout the world, who don’t own shoes. It shows those who participate how it feels to go a day without them, and what we can do to help those in need!

{Neon} Blinded By The Bright.

If there was one predominant trend saturating the runway during Fashion Week in New York, it had to be NEON. Vibrant colors in general are huge for Spring 2012, but the hues most designers fell in love with were bright and bold NEON’S. Although neon is often used as an accent color, this season you will find neon tops, neon dresses, neon skirts, neon shoes, and neon accessories.

So say hello to the 80’s because they are officially back! Okay, so you haven’t sported neon in over 20 years? Worried about looking as though you stepped out of a Boy George video? Neon Fashion Tip #1: Start Off Small

If you are a little uneasy as to how to work these bright colors in your closet, why not start off small? Work a bright pink neon tank into your casual Friday look, or wear neon colored jewelry to your trustworthy black attire. For example, wearing a sexy little black dress tonight? Skip the basic black pumps and work in neon blue pumps. Wearing neon colored accessories will add a hint of color and personality to any outfit. Neon Fashion Tip #2: Shy Away From Accessories

When you are wearing a brightly colored fluorescent top, it is typically protocol to keep the accessories minimal. Bright clothing with overly bright accessories will look too chaotic. Another good tip is to avoid matching the same accessory color with the same color in your outfit. Stay away from neon orange jewelry, shoes or purses when you’re already wearing a neon orange dress. Simple!

Neon Fashion Tip #3: Bring in the Neutral Colors

When wearing a bright colored shirt or a bright colored skirt, it is best to try to pair the item with a neutral color. Don’t try to work a neon top with a neon bottom. Instead wear neon bottoms with a white blouse. Black also looks super fab with vibrant hues. When you’re wearing a neon pink dress, work in your favorite black pumps or sandals instead of wearing pink on your tootsies. The neutral colors will help balance out your look.

Depending on your body shape, neon can be less attention grabbing on either the bottom or the top. Experts recommend trying out several different styles and colors before deciding on what works best on you!
